Team Tennessee!!
Welcome to Team Tennessee!!
Team Tennessee Volunteers!!
State welcome sign
... ... ... participated with Team Tennessee Volunteers during the 2019 Source-a-Thon, adding sources to 2581 previously unsourced profiles.

Contents

Introduction

October 4 - October 7 — the start of Family History Month — is our fourth annual "Source-a-Thon"!

This three-day event is for a good cause (sourced genealogy!), there will be thousands of dollars worth of door prizes donated from around the genealogy community, and it will be lots of fun.

The marathon starts Friday, October 4 at 8 AM (ET) and ends Monday, October 7, 8 AM (ET) but you don't need to participate the whole time (!). If you can join for any of it, please post an ANSWER below saying either the team you'd like to be on (see the team list) or your genealogical interests or geographic location and we'll assign a team before the start of the event. This is our fourth annual 72-hour sourcing marathon. The previous three Source-a-Thons have been great fun and very productive. In 2016 we added sources to over 22,000 profiles. In 2017 we had almost 500 participants and added sources to over 53,000 profiles. In 2018 we sourced over 72,000 profiles! Join us this year to beat that record! The goal of the event is to clear out the Unsourced Profiles category on WikiTree. Although including sources is in our community's Honor Code, inexperienced genealogists don't always record them. Sometimes the source is "Aunt Mabel." This doesn't mean the information isn't worth preserving or sharing. It's a starting point — information waiting to be confirmed. Like a marathon, this is a competition, but most participants won't be serious competitors. Most of us will be doing it for the challenge of sourcing as many profiles as they can, for the mission, and for the fun of it

Schedule

The party starts Friday morning, October 4, at 8 AM (ET) and runs until Monday, October 7, at 8 AM (ET). (Eastern Daylight Time is GMT -4.) Genealogists from all over the world will be participating at the same time. Click here to register now. The registration cut-off is Wednesday, October 2, at 11:59 pm, ET.

Registration

See this page for information about prizes - it has the schedule too.

For information about joining or creating a team, check out this page. (Hint - for the Source-a-Thon, you need to say you want to join Team Tennessee when you https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/900156/have-you-registered-for-the-2019-source-a-thon-yet post an answer in this thread to join. Once registered, you will then be given the Source-a-Thon badge and assigned a “race number.” We'll use that number to draw the random winners for the many door prizes.

Important Links

These 2 labelled photos should give you all the basics: page 1 and page 2.

How to Participate

  1. Choose a profile. It does NOT need to be a Tennessee profile.
  2. Add a good source. For more information on sources, see our Sources page.
  3. Once a valid source is placed on the profile, remove the {{Unsourced}} template or [[Category:Unsourced Profiles]] categorization, if there are any.
  4. Click the "Challenge Tracker" button at the very top of the page and choose the "Source-a-Thon" option.
  5. Move on to the next profile! Here's a handy video to help you out if you need a visual

Tip: To prevent upset colleagues, for profiles part of or managed (and sometimes PPP't) by multiple Projects or projects other then Tennessee Project, it's best to just add the source you found in a post to the profile and leave it to a project member to add it to the Bio.

Adding Sources and Counting Sourced Profiles

Participating means removing profiles from the Unsourced Profiles category. They cannot be new profiles that you create. Select an Open (white) profile from anywhere in the category or one of its subcategories and search for sources to back up the facts of the person's life. Valid sources include census records, BMD records/index references, military documents, land documents, wills, etc. A source cannot be another user-generated family tree, such as Geni or an Ancestry Member Tree. If you find a valid source: Edit the profile to add the source, according to our Sources guide.

Remove the
This profile lacks source information. Please add sources that support the facts.
Research Note Box tag.

Save the profile and click the Challenge Tracker button. On the Challenge Tracker, select the Source-a-Thon checkbox. Visit the Source-a-Thon Instruction Video for a step-by-step walkthrough of these instructions. If you don't find a source after searching, please add a Research Notes section to the profile. Say where you have looked and sign your comment with four tildes (Barnett-3517 03:01, 3 September 2019 (UTC)) so it is dated. For example: "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and couldn't find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry." This way the next researcher knows where to start. For more details: Do you know how to participate in the Source-a-Thon? Challenge Tracker makes it easy. What profiles count as "unsourced" for the Source-a-Thon?

Communication

During the event, we will use the Team Tennessee Chat thread for all team communications. You can also use the https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/691162/do-you-have-source-a-thon-questions if you have questions.

The Tables Are Ready!

Click one of the following links to reach a table of Unsourced profiles prepared from the database for Tennessee. You can also use the Unsourced categories to find profiles that need sources, but the tables reached through the links below have a lot more information than the Category pages show.

Whether you source a profile you found through the table or a category page, when you save the profile, there will be a button for "Challenge Tracker" at the top of the page. Click that, complete the form (add your WikiTree ID if needed, check the appropriate challenge, and describe your action), then click the "Add" button & the profile will automatically be counted toward your total in the challenge you selected.[1]

Very good we Team Tennessee Volunteers did very good on this year. Almost all of us participated in this there were about 3 or 4 of our team mates that didn't. I did participate in it but I made a Tracker free space page and I just sent it to Ales asking him if what is on that can be added to the team total. I did about 11 considering what went on in my real life time. If that is counted then that will make our final team total as 2592. I hope it will be counted. As if said before thanks for all the participation and the help especially Stacy.

Hi Volunteers! Congratulations from all of us at the Windsor Warriors for your amazing contributions during the 2019 Source-a-thon. What a fun weekend we had! It was a pleasure running alongside you all and we look forward to seeing you in the branches. Susie :-)

Taking a break for a few days, but this A-Thon left me with a ton of potential work. I started a spreadsheet weeks ago w/unsourced profiles. Links to both WT and Ancestry profiles. In finding people to find sources, I've also identified so much info that can go into profiles to fill them out. Somehow, I'll find a way to convert this for the next Connect-A-Thon, because nearly everyone had family that is not in WT yet. Updating the spreadsheet slowed me down a bit, but now it's a very valuable resource!
